USTA

Overview

As the Creative Lead in UX and Design at the United States Tennis Association (USTA), I oversaw a team of designers and researchers to create and unite the USTA Ecosystem. During my tenure, I implemented an agile system to develop a large-scale website, USTA.com. This process involved developing a design system that served as "one source of truth" between developers and stakeholders. The USTA.com website was designed to provide a seamless user experience for tennis enthusiasts, players, and fans.

Website

During my tenure at the USTA, I collaborated with multiple stakeholders to identify the critical pages and complex areas linked with membership sign-up. At that time, we were encountering a substantial decline in membership sign-ups, and our main goal was to resolve the issue and augment membership.

After developing and testing wireframes, we created a series of template pages for use throughout the USTA ecosystem. Additionally, we designed pages that simplified the sign-in process and introduced more user-friendly account screens, which proved highly effective.

Design System

Working with the Invision Design System Manager, the UX/Dev team created a design system to be used as "one source of truth," which helped manage the brand's consistency while cutting down development time.

Net Generation

The Net Generation mobile app is the official youth tennis program of the United States Tennis Association (USTA). It is designed to give kids the skills to be great on and off the court, and to provide parents, coaches, teachers, and volunteers with expert tennis content.

The Challenge

One of the significant challenges faced by the USTA was to bring expert tennis content directly to parents, players, coaches, teachers, and volunteers. The USTA wanted to create a platform that would be easily accessible to all these groups and provide them with the tools they need to improve their tennis skills and knowledge.

Solution

To meet this challenge, the USTA developed the Net Generation mobile app. The app is designed to cater to the needs of different user groups, including players, coaches, and parents. It provides a platform for coaches to connect with their players to send practice activities, skill badges, constructive feedback, and skill assessments. Coaches also have exclusive access to USTA coaching curriculums, which include videos, lesson plans, skills, games, and play-at-home activities.

Parents can use the app to manage their child's tennis journey, search for programs, and find USTA-verified coaches. The app also allows players to discover fun new ways to learn and play tennis. Based on tennis competencies at every ball level, players are rewarded with badges once they have demonstrated mastery of a skill or displayed positive character traits.

Badges

The app lets coaches connect with their players to send practice activities, skill badges, constructive feedback, and skill assessments. Through the app and website, coaches also have exclusive access to USTA coaching curriculums, which include videos, lesson plans, skills, games, and play-at-home activities. The app provides parents with a platform to manage their child's tennis journey, search for programs, and find USTA-verified coaches.

Players

Players, on the other hand, can discover fun new ways to learn and play tennis. The app also allows coaches to connect with their players off the court and motivate them with practice activities, skill badges, constructive feedback, and skill assessments. Based on tennis competencies at every ball level, players are rewarded with badges once they have demonstrated mastery of a skill or displayed positive character traits.

Results

The Net Generation app has been highly successful in bringing together players, coaches, parents, and volunteers to provide a seamless and engaging user experience for all tennis enthusiasts. The app has received positive feedback from users, who appreciate its ease of use, comprehensive content, and engaging features. The USTA has seen an increase in participation in its youth tennis programs since the launch of the app. Conclusion: The Net Generation mobile app is an excellent example of how technology can be used to bring people together and enhance their experiences. The USTA has successfully leveraged the power of mobile technology to create a platform that serves the needs of a diverse group of users and provides them with the tools they need to improve their tennis skills and knowledge.
